Tyrrell Winston is well-known for creating sculptural assemblages using found materials, such as discarded basketballs, to fuel contemporary narratives revolving around sports and their existence within culture. Recently, he embarked on an exploration into the myth of the celebrity athlete through large-scale paintings that are reminiscent of the iconic Abstract Expressionist, Cy Twombly.

The New York-based artist has worked with Louis Buhl & Co. on a new sculptural edition dubbed Swimming Pools and Bubblegum. Carrying the artist’s penchant for basketball, the artwork freeze-frames the moment a ball swishes through a hoop — a symbolic instance that captures the ultimate goal within the sport, but simultaneously accentuating the physical shape and movement of the object.

Dressed in a vibrant gradient, the sculpture takes on various colors depending on where it’s viewed from. With its transformational nature, Swimming Pools and Bubblegum reminds the viewer of the persistent energy that remains within seemingly insignificant records of human existence. Crafted in epoxy, chrome and automotive urethane paint, Swimming Pools and Bubblegum is an edition of 20 and available to purchase for $2,750 USD on Louis Buhl & Co.
