It was absolute pandemonium at global Swatch stores over the weekend as the collaborative MoonSwatch with OMEGA was released. Fans of the Speedmaster Moonwatch along with resellers camped in record numbers where some even arrived almost two days in advance. Some Swatch locations reported fights and trampling with the opening of its stores — leading to delays and police intervention — but were eventually able to sell out in record time.

The Speedmaster has long held a spot in many watch enthusiasts’ rotation, not only for its approachable price, which gives rise to a tremendous amount of value, but also for its synonymous connection to the world of space exploration and NASA — the excitement is magnified when you factor in that we are at the beginning of the Artemis-era for the space agency. This unprecedented collaboration was enough for me to get out of my apartment on Saturday morning, especially as I believed there would be a good chance of leftovers. Looking back, my naivety was somewhat justified as I was going by the fact that it was not a limited release, Swatch’s production capacity, and the two-watch limit per shopper, but yes, there was a lot working against me. This was, at the end of the day, a Bioceramic quartz version of the iconic OMEGA Moonwatch for a price of $260 USD.

When I arrived at the scene, I was completely flabbergasted. It was something out of Supreme drop and I instantly recalled memories of my youth when I would line up for sneakers — except this was even more terrifying. I thought to myself, “not only are the watches that require years of saving waitlisted to oblivion, but they’ve also done it to Swatch!” Watch collaborations aren’t what worries me, heck, I find the Prada x IWC, BMW x Ball, Tadao Ando x Bvlgari, Hodinkee collabs, and even the Jacob & Co x Supreme watches all very interesting, but it’s more the prevalence of this high-low strategy. Is the price weighted towards the product or brand value, and will this become the next widely adopted device thrown around in marketing? Early examples arrive as the ingenious ongoing Balenciaga Crocs collaboration and adidas’ efforts in working with fashion houses (non-joint label).

While I am utmost certain that names like OMEGA and Swatch will keep horology at top priority, things like this can easily set a precedent for a rinse-and-repeat approach to product releases. My twenties saw a massive use of greenwashing in advertising, we are currently seeing streetwear peddled at some of the most prestigious auction houses at record prices, and now, more than ever, brands are struggling to tap into who and what is “cool,” regardless of compromise in order have a stupendous quarterly report.

Like all new and unknown things, there will be a slight sense of fear tied to it, and while it is comical to think that these thoughts were all conjured up while witnessing that madness that was unfolding in front of Swatch, there are a lot of interesting things to unpack. Although it doesn’t appear that in this instance, the collab was just a cash grab, as a tremendous amount of detail went into the MoonSwatch (just look at the dot over 90 and accented “E”), it does make me realize that the success of it could be the further opening of Pandora’s box. These topics are never fun to go at alone, so like our Round Table regarding Rolex’s decision to go colorful and to add a two-tone version of its Explorer, we’ve enlisted a few passionate watch collectors to analyze this release.

This Round Table sees the return of Tim Bender of Fog City Vintage, Doug Kaplan of Bob’s Watches, and a man who really needs no introduction in the world of OMEGA Speedmasters, Robert-Jan Broer of Fratello Watches — creator of the #SpeedyTuesday community and the two sold-out limited edition OMEGA “Speedy Tuesday” watches. So join us on this Tuesday as we talk about the cult following of the Moonwatch, the impact this MoonSwatch has made, and if this was a blessing and a curse for the Swiss watchmakers.

First off, what is your connection with the OMEGA Speedmaster?

Tim Bender (Fog City Vintage)

Growing up I was big in to outer space so naturally I was drawn to the OMEGA Speedmaster. While I’m most passionate about Rolex, specifically 5 digit references, I have owned many over the years and thoroughly enjoyed my time with them. Hard to beat a tropical dial speedy.

Robert-Jan Broer (Fratello Watches)

I love the Speedmaster watch and consider myself to be a Speedmaster collector. I bought my first Speedmaster back in 1999, a vintage one with caliber 321. I was a student at the time with no money, but I did have a car, which I sold to be able to buy this watch. I founded the Speedy Tuesday community back in 2012, which we celebrated with two limited edition “Speedy Tuesday” watches in 2017 and 2018. Limited to 2012 pieces each, a great success.

Doug Kaplan (Bob’s Watches)

Having visited 21 Basel Fairs during my watch career, I initially pictured the massive OMEGA booth at the center of the event emitting some type of gravitational pull in the Swiss watch industry. In 2009, astronauts visited the Basel Fair for the 40th anniversary of the moon landing, and I just knew that the OMEGA Speedmaster was a watch I wanted to wear with pride. Now I get to enjoy the OMEGA brand daily as we handle a wide variety of Speedmasters at Bob’s Watches.

What about Swatch?

Tim Bender (Fog City Vintage)

Surprisingly I don’t know if I’ve ever owned a Swatch.

Swatch Omega Speedmaster MoonSwatch Collection Round table Doug Kaplan bobs watches Robert Jan Broer Fratello Watches moonswatch snoopy swiss speedytuesday

Robert-Jan Broer (Fratello Watches)

I was born in 1977, being a kid in the 1980s, Swatch played a crucial role in timekeeping for me. I still have my first Swatch models and they all still work.

Swatch Omega Speedmaster MoonSwatch Collection Round table Doug Kaplan bobs watches Robert Jan Broer Fratello Watches moonswatch snoopy swiss speedytuesday

Doug Kaplan (Bob’s Watches)

My first Swatch was a birthday gift in 1985 from my parents. It was a Swatch Yamaha GJ700. It was a colorful craze for kids, and I recall purchasing the crystal protector which was basically a rubber-type band crossing the case. Why it was called Yamaha, I don’t know, but I ended up working in Japan for many years in the watch industry, so Swatch Yamaha may have been an early sign for my long future in Swiss watches. Everybody seems to remember their first Swatch. The Swatch brand continues to evolve and collaborate with social and art culture, and now even offers personalization options.

Do you like the Speedmaster?

Swatch Omega Speedmaster MoonSwatch Collection Round table Doug Kaplan bobs watches Robert Jan Broer Fratello Watches moonswatch snoopy swiss speedytuesday

Tim Bender (Fog City Vintage)

While I’m a Rolex guy at heart, I think anyone who is into watches has likely had or wanted a Speedmaster at somepoint. They’re iconic, legible and a great size for most men. Additionally they represent a big value when looking at comparable offerings from other brands.

Swatch Omega Speedmaster MoonSwatch Collection Round table Doug Kaplan bobs watches Robert Jan Broer Fratello Watches moonswatch snoopy swiss speedytuesday

Robert-Jan Broer (Fratello Watches)

I like the Speedmasters for mainly two, no, three reasons. 1) the design is simply amazing. I think it’s the best legible chronograph out there, in a timeless case design. 2) The entire Moonwatch story is great, from the qualification by NASA to the crucial role it played during Apollo 13, where it ensured the safe home coming of three astronauts. 3) Speedmaster wearers are great people in general. It is fun talking to them, as they often have a great story to tell about why they bought the watch or where they got the watch.

Swatch Omega Speedmaster MoonSwatch Collection Round table Doug Kaplan bobs watches Robert Jan Broer Fratello Watches moonswatch snoopy swiss speedytuesday

Doug Kaplan (Bob’s Watches)

Yes. It is easily recognizable for all watch collectors and afficianados. Regardless of the retail price of a Speedmaster compared to so many top grail Swiss luxury brands, it receives so much respect and credibility in the watch industry and is an essential item for starting a watch collection.

Which reference is a personal favorite for you?

Swatch Omega Speedmaster MoonSwatch Collection Round table Doug Kaplan bobs watches Robert Jan Broer Fratello Watches moonswatch snoopy swiss speedytuesday

Tim Bender (Fog City Vintage)

To me the quintessential Speedmaster is the Ref. 145.012. This is the exact specs of the Speedmaster that went to the moon. They come at a modest premium but remain very reasonable given their historic importance and where similar Rolex from the era trade.

Swatch Omega Speedmaster MoonSwatch Collection Round table Doug Kaplan bobs watches Robert Jan Broer Fratello Watches moonswatch snoopy swiss speedytuesday

Robert-Jan Broer (Fratello Watches)

Well, the two Speedmaster Speedy Tuesday models make me most proud. But if I exclude those, I think I mainly wear my Moonshine gold Speedmaster Professional Apollo XI 50th anniversary edition from 2019.

Swatch Omega Speedmaster MoonSwatch Collection Round table Doug Kaplan bobs watches Robert Jan Broer Fratello Watches moonswatch snoopy swiss speedytuesday

Doug Kaplan (Bob’s Watches)

I like the 304.30.44.52.01.001 Speedmaster Moonphase. As a fan of complications, I enjoy the complicated dial, see-through case back and new movement housed in what is know as the “sapphire sandwich”.

I recognize the history and beauty in the design of the Speedy, but one of the reasons that I never obsessed over them is that I just couldn’t keep up with the releases. Doesn’t this add to that number? Is it just me?

Swatch Omega Speedmaster MoonSwatch Collection Round table Doug Kaplan bobs watches Robert Jan Broer Fratello Watches moonswatch snoopy swiss speedytuesday

Tim Bender (Fog City Vintage)

Definitely understand that. OMEGA has caught a lot of flak from the watch community because of their constant flow of not so limited “Limited Releases”. While I understand OMEGA is in the business of turning a profit I think they’d have more brand cache among collectors if they issued fewer and smaller releases. At heart, us watch nerds love the thrill of the chase.

Swatch Omega Speedmaster MoonSwatch Collection Round table Doug Kaplan bobs watches Robert Jan Broer Fratello Watches moonswatch snoopy swiss speedytuesday

Robert-Jan Broer (Fratello Watches)

It is you. The best Moonwatch to buy is the standard one with the Hesalite (plexi) crystal and stainless steel case back. All others are fun to have and to add to one’s collection, but if you only want to buy one, get the current “standard” Moonwatch.

Swatch Omega Speedmaster MoonSwatch Collection Round table Doug Kaplan bobs watches Robert Jan Broer Fratello Watches moonswatch snoopy swiss speedytuesday

Doug Kaplan (Bob’s Watches)

The watch industry is a delicate balance of art and engineering. Brands must evolve both on the outside and inside to adapt to the needs and trends of a global society, while working to improve the accuracy of time. There are many type of consumers, some purists, while others buy their favorite color, appropriate case size for their body type, or connect with a limited edition’s rarity. We sell the gamit of Speedmasters from 321s, Ed Whites, and Snoopys, and each one has a both a historical and personal story behind it.

The Speedmaster collector is something of a different breed. The collectors that I’ve met are really good at blocking out the noise for “It” watches and are loyal when it comes to documenting OMEGA’s history. What are the major differences that you’ve come across in someone who’s into collecting Speedmasters versus the usual suspects?

Swatch Omega Speedmaster MoonSwatch Collection Round table Doug Kaplan bobs watches Robert Jan Broer Fratello Watches moonswatch snoopy swiss speedytuesday

Tim Bender (Fog City Vintage)

I definitely agree on this. In my experience the OMEGA collector is drawn to the brand because of its heritage and accomplishments. For them it’s passion and has nothing to do with hype or the desire for people to recognize what’s on their wrist. They wear these watches because they love them. Frankly they prefer people don’t take note on what they’re wearing and want to fly under the radar.

Swatch Omega Speedmaster MoonSwatch Collection Round table Doug Kaplan bobs watches Robert Jan Broer Fratello Watches moonswatch snoopy swiss speedytuesday

Robert-Jan Broer (Fratello Watches)

I think, with the true Speedmaster enthusiasts and collectors, it is about having fun and also making side steps in collecting all sorts of Moonlanding-related stuff. It’s quite a nerdy bunch, but in a good and charming way. Unlike many other usual suspects, where the main topic quickly becomes the amount of money they made with buying and selling watches, and how much their watches increased in value. They might keep you thinking they’re passionate watch collectors for the first 5 minutes, but then they turn into living spreadsheets. There’s nothing wrong with that, but it just doesn’t interest me. I like the watches for what they are, not for what they’re worth. Life is too short not to enjoy your things.

Doug Kaplan (Bob’s Watches)

OMEGA is special to have deep followings across many iconic relationships such as James Bond Seamaster watches, Olympic special editions, and Moonwatch/space history. OMEGA does an amazing job both physically and digitally in educating its fans in both the history of the Moonwatch and where we are needing to preserve the stability of the universe around us.

One could argue that this will affect the value of the OMEGA brand, but does it really hurt them considering they are part of the same family? Would this have even been possible if Swatch didn’t own OMEGA?

Swatch Omega Speedmaster MoonSwatch Collection Round table Doug Kaplan bobs watches Robert Jan Broer Fratello Watches moonswatch snoopy swiss speedytuesday

Tim Bender (Fog City Vintage)

I don’t think it does given the relationship the brands have with each other, and the bracket OMEGA sits in. OMEGA makes amazing watches but they’re not perceived to be in the same class as Rolex for example. This is largely due to the fact they’re not independent and are beholden to shareholder interests i.e. profits. This is largely why they make many more “limited” releases and have higher production volume. If they were independent I think this would be a tighter rope to walk.

Swatch Omega Speedmaster MoonSwatch Collection Round table Doug Kaplan bobs watches Robert Jan Broer Fratello Watches moonswatch snoopy swiss speedytuesday

Robert-Jan Broer (Fratello Watches)

Perhaps not, but we will never know if this would have been possible without OMEGA being part of the Swatch Group. I think it won’t hurt OMEGA at all, to be honest. In fact, it will get a new audience interested in watches, and hopefully into buying the real Speedmaster as well. As a matter of fact, I’ve been informed that Moonwatch sales went up quite a bit since the introduction of this collaboration. So far its has been a win win situation for both brands involved.

Doug Kaplan (Bob’s Watches)

Brands have to find the correct fit and it can’t be forced. The Swatch x OMEGA project is a sure sign that consumers decide if it works or not. The key is for brands to try, regardless of their corporate connections.

The OMEGA x Swatch news broke the internet. While it does seem like a mutual win is what most of you are saying, do you think one of the brands came out a little more on top in this scenario?

Swatch Omega Speedmaster MoonSwatch Collection Round table Doug Kaplan bobs watches Robert Jan Broer Fratello Watches moonswatch snoopy swiss speedytuesday

Tim Bender (Fog City Vintage)

I think this will be a win for both. Have to remember both brands are part of the Swatch Group. The more traditional Swatch consumer will likely get bitten by the watch bug, and specifically OMEGA, and will likely seek out other offerings from the brand and other portfolio companies. As it relates to the economics, given this is not a limited release and likely has very low production costs, this should be a very profitable product with a very broad market.

Swatch Omega Speedmaster MoonSwatch Collection Round table Doug Kaplan bobs watches Robert Jan Broer Fratello Watches moonswatch snoopy swiss speedytuesday

Robert-Jan Broer (Fratello Watches)

Productwise, it could have easily turned into a disaster, but it didn’t. Swatch did, together with OMEGA, an amazing job on getting the design right. In a very respectful way, they created Swatch “interpretations” of the Moonwatch. If they would have chosen a metal instead of Bioceramic for the case, for example, it would have turned into disaster. The MoonSwatch is a genius move by Swatch and OMEGA.

Swatch Omega Speedmaster MoonSwatch Collection Round table Doug Kaplan bobs watches Robert Jan Broer Fratello Watches moonswatch snoopy swiss speedytuesday

Doug Kaplan (Bob’s Watches)

It is a big win for both brands and the watch industry. It highlights the interest in watches by our youth giving an optimistic look at the future of watchmaking. It reinforces the strength of the iconic Moonwatch as well as the social relevance of Swatch’s global audience. Lastly, collaborations are clearly an effective approach to branding to today’s consumers, so it is refreshing to see two iconic brands reaching a clear win-win together. It is the first time I have ever seen people lining up by the hundreds around the world for a watch launch.

Do you think we will continue to see some more high-meets-low releases, or even further internal collaborations from the likes of Richemont or LVMH?

Swatch Omega Speedmaster MoonSwatch Collection Round table Doug Kaplan bobs watches Robert Jan Broer Fratello Watches moonswatch snoopy swiss speedytuesday

Tim Bender (Fog City Vintage)

Given the sales antics of brands like Rolex, Patek Philippe and Audemars Piguet similar collaborations would be a very savvy way to attack their market share. People are tired of the games that one needs to play to simply buy a watch. These respective conglomerates have some great brands under them and if done well could be very profitable projects that will welcome new consumers to their portfolios.

Swatch Omega Speedmaster MoonSwatch Collection Round table Doug Kaplan bobs watches Robert Jan Broer Fratello Watches moonswatch snoopy swiss speedytuesday

Robert-Jan Broer (Fratello Watches)

Perhaps. If Richemont, LVMH, or let’s say AP or Rolex have the balls to go to Hayek and ask for a Swatch interpretation of the Daytona or Royal Oak, it could become an instant success as well. Thing is, a watch for this project needs to be an icon. Not every brand has one.

Swatch Omega Speedmaster MoonSwatch Collection Round table Doug Kaplan bobs watches Robert Jan Broer Fratello Watches moonswatch snoopy swiss speedytuesday

Doug Kaplan (Bob’s Watches)

In the fashion industry, these collaborations are happening quite often between luxury and streetwear brands. I am excited to see how more watch brands can use their creativity to find the win-win.

Who do you see buying this watch? I am referencing OMEGA quite a bit even though this is a Swatch collaboration, but it just feels like this was targeted towards fans of the former.

Swatch Omega Speedmaster MoonSwatch Collection Round table Doug Kaplan bobs watches Robert Jan Broer Fratello Watches moonswatch snoopy swiss speedytuesday

Tim Bender (Fog City Vintage)

I think you’ll find many different demographics picking these up. They’re a fun affordable option for even the most serious collector but will also be a great option for both those starting their journey as well as budget conscious consumers. These will be great do it all watches perfect for everything from the gym to the beach.

Swatch Omega Speedmaster MoonSwatch Collection Round table Doug Kaplan bobs watches Robert Jan Broer Fratello Watches moonswatch snoopy swiss speedytuesday

Robert-Jan Broer (Fratello Watches)

Definitely certain Speedmaster collectors, but also people who love the Moonwatch but don’t have $7000 to spend on a watch (yet). However, I also think people who are approaching it from a fashion point of few. Funky new low-cost watches based on an iconic product. And, of course, some flippers who want to make a quick buck. As soon as Swatch will open its online sales for this model though, that will be done as well.

Swatch Omega Speedmaster MoonSwatch Collection Round table Doug Kaplan bobs watches Robert Jan Broer Fratello Watches moonswatch snoopy swiss speedytuesday

I feel that fans from both brands came together on this launch.

Are 11 variations too many, in attempts to push the planets theme?

Swatch Omega Speedmaster MoonSwatch Collection Round table Doug Kaplan bobs watches Robert Jan Broer Fratello Watches moonswatch snoopy swiss speedytuesday

Tim Bender (Fog City Vintage)

I don’t think so given the play; being an approachable watch for the common man/woman. They wanted mass market appeal and to have an option for everyone. Also I think they’re banking on people wanting to buy multiples. At this price point they could drop even more in the future and get repeat business for their customers. I could see limited color ways from sports teams to global causes.

Swatch Omega Speedmaster MoonSwatch Collection Round table Doug Kaplan bobs watches Robert Jan Broer Fratello Watches moonswatch snoopy swiss speedytuesday

Robert-Jan Broer (Fratello Watches)

Just about right. There’s something there for everyone. I have the Mars one, would love to add a Uranus or Neptune and a Venus for my wife.

Swatch Omega Speedmaster MoonSwatch Collection Round table Doug Kaplan bobs watches Robert Jan Broer Fratello Watches moonswatch snoopy swiss speedytuesday

Doug Kaplan (Bob’s Watches)

The connection to the planets worked so well for the marketing. Something for everyone.

This is most likely going to be a hard one to get for the time being. Do you see it reselling like crazy with continuous growth, or more like a flash in the pan due to it being such new territory?

Swatch Omega Speedmaster MoonSwatch Collection Round table Doug Kaplan bobs watches Robert Jan Broer Fratello Watches moonswatch snoopy swiss speedytuesday

Tim Bender (Fog City Vintage)

Given their distribution strategy I definitely see these trading at a premium initially. I wouldn’t be surprised if the early examples trade at 3-4x. That said, as this was done to get watches in as many hands as possible I’m sure production will ramp up as well as their distribution. As this plays out you’ll likely see them return back to their retail prices.

Swatch Omega Speedmaster MoonSwatch Collection Round table Doug Kaplan bobs watches Robert Jan Broer Fratello Watches moonswatch snoopy swiss speedytuesday

Robert-Jan Broer (Fratello Watches)

Well, they are being offered for total nonsense prices already. If someone is paying those prices, they have more money than brains. But either way, it shows Swatch can still be disruptive.

Swatch Omega Speedmaster MoonSwatch Collection Round table Doug Kaplan bobs watches Robert Jan Broer Fratello Watches moonswatch snoopy swiss speedytuesday

Doug Kaplan (Bob’s Watches)

I don’t have a crystal ball but let’s wait a few months to see the availability in stores and online.

Lastly, does this scratch the itch for a new collector that’s interested in getting a Speedmaster?

Swatch Omega Speedmaster MoonSwatch Collection Round table Doug Kaplan bobs watches Robert Jan Broer Fratello Watches moonswatch snoopy swiss speedytuesday

Tim Bender (Fog City Vintage)

I think so. Can’t go wrong for the price tag. Even if the buyer ends up still wanting “more” watch this is a great option for the gym, beach etc. Definitely look forward to getting my hands on one. How substantial it feels on the wrist will certainly matter for the true watch folks. OMEGA if you’re reading this I’d love to take one for a spin.

Swatch Omega Speedmaster MoonSwatch Collection Round table Doug Kaplan bobs watches Robert Jan Broer Fratello Watches moonswatch snoopy swiss speedytuesday

Robert-Jan Broer (Fratello Watches)

Well, it might be an in-between step in the plan of getting a Moonwatch. But this MoonSwatch doesn’t replace the itch for owning a Speedmaster Moonwatch. It’s just a fun watch, and the finishing, quality, and wearing experience have little to do with the real thing. And that’s what they’re after in the end.

Swatch Omega Speedmaster MoonSwatch Collection Round table Doug Kaplan bobs watches Robert Jan Broer Fratello Watches moonswatch snoopy swiss speedytuesday

Doug Kaplan (Bob’s Watches)

I believe so. It’s even translating to increased traffic on our Speedmaster pages at Bob’s Watches. These watches last for many decades and will be cherished by new owners over and over.
