Intel’s Mobileye, which develops self-driving cars and advanced driver assistance systems, has begun testing autonomous vehicles (AV) in New York Cityas part of its rapidly expanding global AV testing program.

Utilizing New York City as a testing ground — the United State’s largest city by population — the company can demonstrate the full capabilities of its AV technology.“Driving in complex urban areas such as New York City is a crucial step in vetting the capabilities of an autonomous system and moving the industry closer to commercial readiness,” said Professor Amnon Shashua, senior vice president of Intel and president and CEO of Mobileye, in a press release.

Showcased in the above video, Mobileye’s camera-only subsystem AV can drive through highly-congested streets with pedestrians, cyclists, construction zones, double-parked vehicles and more. The company’s True Redundancy approach, focuses on the computer-vision subsystem before adding a lidar-radar subsystem for redundancy.

Currently, Mobileye is the only company with an AV testing permit in NYC. Today at the Nasdaq, Shashua stated that the company is making preparations for commercial deployment.
