According to reports, the Girl Scouts of the USA are now sitting on millions of unsold boxes of cookies due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The organization has revealed that its local councils and troops are sitting on 15 million boxes of cookies, with around 12 million boxes still at baking warehouses.

The surplus is an uncommon occurrence for the Girl Scouts as normally the group sells a little under 200 million boxes per season which is around $800 million USD of cookies. With COVID-19 restrictions making it impossible to sell door-to-door, outside of grocery stores, libraries and in public parks, the Girl Scouts were forced to pivot to a digital-only approach even partnering with Grubhub to sell cookies. If unable to sell the 15 million boxes of cookies, funding for Girl Scouts programming, travel, camps and other activities will be greatly affected.
