Sony To Roll Out SSD Storage Expansion and Unlock Higher Cooling Fan Speed for PS5
To deal with the size of next-gen games.
According to reports, Sony is set to introduce SSD storage expansion for the PlayStation 5 this summer.
The reports go on to note that the rollout is expected to help deal with the size of next-gen games, which can go up to 250GB, that easily fill the internal 825GB SSD (only 667GB is usable). The additional storage is expected to fit into the currently empty M.2 expansion slot on Sony consoles.
Although the PS5 is compatible with high-speed PCIe 4.0 M.2 SSD drives and can be easily installed at home, gamers will need to wait for Sony to unlock the extra storage with a firmware update and reveal which are officially supported. The potential firmware update is also expected to unlock higher cooling fan speeds to prevent overheating on the dual SSDs.
