Ross+Kramer Gallery is presenting a joint exhibition by contemporary artists, John Rivas and Ludovic Nkoth.

Rivas creates work that is inspired by distant memories from his native country of El Salvador, while Nkoth creates similarly gestural figures that correspond to his childhood in Cameroon. Despite both having grown up on different parts of the world, the two were in constant dialogue to create a unified body of work. The corresponding art is connected through a similar set of rituals, traditions and superstitions that existed within both their families.

License plates, gloves, embroidery, spray paint and acrylic are amongst the many mediums the two use to weave in the complex histories of their cultural heritage. An example of this can be seen in I’m Here Now, 2021, showcasing Rivas’ uncanny ability to show contemporary tropes through the lens of an almost ancient mode of artmaking. “Four Walls” is on view at Ross+Kramer Gallery in New York until January 8, 2022.

Elsewhere, Arabic calligraphy has made the UNESCO heritage list.
