Following its latest team-up with Vans, Supreme has now returned to reveal an unexpected collaboration with Yohji Yamamoto. Accompany this week’s Fall/Winter 2020 Week 4 Drop, the collaboration combines the storied Japanese designer’s unique fashion sensibilities and New York skate imprint’s signature aesthetic with original artwork by Sancheeto, Peter Saville and Yuuka Asakura.

Standing as one of the most influential fashion designers living and working today, Yohji Yamamoto is regarded as a master craftsman fuelled by a rebellious spirit. Over the last 50 years, Yamamoto has fundamentally affected how people dress with his transformative impact felt far beyond the runway.

Born in 1943, Yohji Yamamoto was raised by his dressmaker mother, Yumi, in Tokyo. His mother encouraged her song to become an attorney leading him to graduate from Keio University in 1966 with a law degree. Straying the path he was on, Yohji noted he “didn’t want to join the ordinary society” and convinced his mother to let him work with her, going on to pursue a degree at Bunka Fashion College.

Following his graduation, Yohji received a prize that would bring him to Paris, where he would help forge the ready-to-wear movement emerging in the wake of haute couture. Struggling to establish his work in France, the young designer would return to Tokyo to found his label Y’s in 1972. Yohji found success with his first collection show in 1977, inspired by the burgeoning punk movement. Returning to Paris in 1981, Yohji and Rei Kawakubo‘s early works helped revolutionize contemporary fashion through their defiant, deconstructed garments and renegade mentality.

Going against the hyper-feminine, form-fitting glamour prevalent in fashion at the time, Yohji Yamamoto introduced his expertise in masterful draping and playful androgyny. Rendered in black, his protective, loose and exaggerated shapes constructed of durable fabrics welcomed possibilities of modern clothing. Today, Yohji caters to a dedicated global following and continues to break barriers between catwalk and street, luxury and sport, tradition and the avant-garde.

Working closely with Supreme, Yohji Yamamoto prepared a Fall/Winter 2020 collection that once again proves his progressive outlook through an unexpected yet sure to be sought after collaboration. The special range features a Leather Work Jacket, Down Jacket, Parka, Wool Suit, Sweater, Shirt, Hooded Sweatshirt, Crewneck, five T-Shirts and a Beanie. The street leaning items expectedly showcase a reverence for black, but also includes tones of bold orange-red, khaki green and white through alternative color options. Proudly marking the collaboration is an array of spray-painted graphics from artist Sancheeto, imagery from famed art director/graphic designer Peter Saville, and sketched work from painting and drawing artist Yuuka Asakura.

The Supreme x Yohji Yamamoto FW20 collection will see a global release, available via the streetwear imprint’s website on September 17 in the United States and September 19 in Japan.
