Nearly 810,000 tickets for the upcoming 2021 Tokyo Olympics have been cancelled as precautionary measures towards the COVID-19 pandemic.

While the number of infections decreased during the summer, the number of cases has since been picking back up with the arrival of winter. The Organizing Committee for the world’s largest sporting is concerned that arena spectators of the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, already postponed by a year, will not be able to safely avoid the “denseness” that the games will bring. Approximately 4.45 million tickets have sold across Japan so far, but now 18 percent of them are being canceled. There’s still a chance those tickets will be resold if maximum occupancy limits for various venues rise — sources have suggested that there will be a clearer picture on what that looks like by next spring.

In case you missed it, the IOC president has stated the Tokyo Olympics will be cancelled if not held in 2021.
