Feldman Architecture's Slot House Fuses Minimalist Design With Interior Warmth
A sleekly organic house hidden in the Los Altos hills.
A hybridization of organic and manmade design flourishes, Feldman Architecture‘s Slot House is an exploration of opposites. On one hand, there’s a brusquely squat white structure tucked into the Los Altos hills; on the other, the organic environment coincides with the warmth of the home’s roomy interior.
The secluded home’s name is derived from the “slot” that divides the house’s spacious nooks, physically distinguishing public and private space while encouraging natural light and skyward views. Proportions are toyed with to generate a homey feel; the master suite and great room are rife with open windows (and 12-foot-tall ceilings) that frame the picturesque surroundings, while an office and media room narrow the walls to create cozy confines. A green roof, balcony and patio with hot tub encourage both residents and visitors to take in the nearby rollicking nature without straying from the home’s inviting central hub.
Plenty of organic design has recently cropped up in California, as evidenced by builds like MAD Architects’ Greenhouse residence.
