FOX Searchlight has released the first official trailer for its biopic on The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings creator JRR Tolkien. Tolkien showcases Nicholas Hoult as the titular fantasy author from his upbringing well into adulthood. The film’s synopsis reads:

“Tolkien explores the formative years of the orphaned author as he finds friendship, love and artistic inspiration among a group of fellow outcasts at school. This takes him into the outbreak of World War I, which threatens to tear the ‘fellowship’ apart. All of these experiences would inspire Tolkien to write his famous Middle-Earth novels.”

Actress Lily Collins rounds out the cast as Tolkien’s wife Edith Bratt alongside stars Tom Glynn Carne, Anthony Boyle, and Patrick Gibson. Check out the footage above and share your thoughts below.
