Marvel Unveils New Hip-Hop Variant Covers Inspired by Chance the Rapper, Wu-Tang Clan & More
See Marvel favorites like Nova, Jessica Jones & Luke Cage become rap’s greatest.

Last year, Marvel brought rap fans and comic book lovers together with their Hip-Hop Variants Collection, a series that reimagined 50 comic book covers as iconic popular rap album covers. The debut series included amazing appropriations of Dr. Dre’s The Chronic, A$AP Rocky’s Long.Live.A$AP, De La Soul’s 3 Feet High and Rising, and many more.
Today, the comic book giant have kicked off the second Hip-Hop Variants Collection. This time around, highlights include Nova recreating Chance the Rapper‘s Coloring Book cover, Luke Cage becoming LL Cool J on Bigger and Deffer, and Jessica Jones replacing Kevin Gates on the Islah cover.
“Comics and hip-hop share a common narrative: They’re all about underdogs struggling, striving and persevering against overwhelming odds,” Marvel editor Axel Alonso told Playboy. “It’s no surprise that so many rappers have been influenced by the Marvel mythology or embraced the Marvel heroes over the decades.”
Check out some of the collection below and see the first six covers via Playboy. The rest of the Marvel Hip-Hop Variants Collection will be released over the fall.
