With no record contract at the time and a plethora of hot singles on deck, Mickey Factz is a living testament that musical talent and determination can still reign supreme during a time when co-signs and gimmicks, to some degree, have overshadowed raw talent. Mickey Factz is a stretch beyond that, having dropped numerous singles and making rounds along the music blogosphere prior to the record deal, Mickey’s buzz was very well-received and nothing less than groundbreaking. Essentially, he didn’t need a marketing scheme – once his music dropped, the fans spoke and here he is today on the brink of dropping his first debut album with his newly signed record deal with Battery/Jive Records. Mickey Factz joins us to share some of his thoughts behind the journey.

Thank you for joining us today Mickey, how’s everything going?

Everything is great. A dream is fulfilled and a journey has begun. I’m feverishly ready for each day.

Since the last time we spoke a lot has changed in your career, most notably your recent signing to a major, can you tell us about your decision to sign with Battery Records/Jive?

There were a couple of situations presented to me but Battery Records/Jive was the perfect place for me to call home. They understand the mind set of an artist of my caliber. Battery is more than genuine in their efforts to see to it that I become a fixture in music.

Can you tell us about GFCnewyork and what you guys do over there and some of the people behind it.

GFCnewyork is a marketing/branding firm I started with a group of guys that wanted to rebuild a culture. We have managers to stylists to A&R’s and creative directors. We are very adamant on maintaining the integrity of what we grew up on and introducing that to the future.

How would you describe your music?

My music is heartfelt and real to me and my surroundings. Its the medicine to the ear and the food for the soul. Its most definitely honest and real.

It’s been said you dropped out of law school to pursue music, can you elaborate on that?

I had a dream and law wasn’t it. My dream was with something that correlated with me from a youth. I would be “dreaming” in class, wishing I was doing what I loved. So after weeks of pondering, I made the decision to follow my heart and go after what I loved. Hip-Hop and music.

You’ve dropped some impressive works in the past, moving forward, what projects can we expect?

You guys can expect a flooding of content like in the past. My first project that I will be releasing will be my mixtape which is humbly titled: “I’m Better Than You”. That will be released mid-summer. My official debut will be released in the fall titled “The Achievement.” It’s what I’ve been working on for the past 2 years.

These days many artists opt to the indie route, did you ever consider going indie before you signed to a major?

Of course. I think every artist ideally would like to take a shot at going indie for the independence of an artist. We get more freedoms and liberties that way. However, I believe deep down that I made the right decision. And as the project rolls out, you will see why I feel that way.

Tell us how you got started in music and some of your influences if any.

I was introduced to music while in the womb of my mother. My father would rap to her belly. As a child, I was listening to Michael Jackson as all the other kids were. Then gradually I was introduced to Hip Hop by my older cousins. So my influences range from Michael Jackson to Biggie Smalls to John P. Kee to Aerosmith. I love music in general. No set genre. Just music.

Any final words you would like to include?

I do this for all those that breathe, The Achievement is approaching in the Fall.
