Watch JAY-Z’s Mother Gloria Carter Give Powerful GLAAD Media Awards Speech
She received the “Special Recognition” award for JAY Z’s song “Smile.”
Last night, JAY-Z‘s mother Gloria Carter was honored at the GLAAD Media Awards. Mrs. Carter was there to accept the “Special Recognition” award for her 4:44 song “Smile.” JAY-Z revealed in the song fore the first time publicly that his mother was a lesbian. “Mama had four kids, but she’s a lesbian/Had to pretend so long that she’s a thespian,” he rapped.
During her acceptance speech, she spoke about her sexuality/orientation and coming out to her son. “Here I am. I’m loving, I’m respectful, I’m productive, and I’m a human being who has a right to love who I love,” Carter said. “So everybody, just smile, be free.”
