A Cryptic New 'Death Stranding' Trailer Revealed at The Game Awards 2017
“Once there was an explosion…”
Metal Gear Solid director Hideo Kojima and Guillermo del Toro attended last night’s The Game Awards, where they presented another look at their joint PS4 effort, Death Stranding, starring actors Norman Reedus and Mads Mikkelsen. The trailer above drops viewers in an Alien-esque sci-fi horror setting, with scary visuals and a shroud of mystery behind the causality.
A squad including Reedus are haunted by invisible monsters that appear out of nowhere and drag the crewmates into the black muck they create when around. Death by their hands is so bad that much of the crew resort to killing themselves before the monsters get a chance to. The trailer then jumps to showing Reedus under the ocean surrounded by sea life and a baby — in Reedus’ throat, no less –sucking its thumb. Afterwards, he wakes up and is back where his crew was, as he stares up at five humanoid beings — strikingly similar to Psycho Mantis from MGS — while he provides narration.
Kojima and Death Stranding are becoming an annual thing for The Game Awards. Two years ago, the director didn’t show up to accept trophies for Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, as it was revealed that former publisher Konami was denying him from attending. And last year, free from Konami, Kojima presented another surreal trailer for Death Stranding.
