Nintendo’s NX Console Rumored to Be Going Retro With Gaming Cartridges
Nostalgic and technically sound.

Nintendo intends to keep things old school as rumors circulate of it opting for gaming cartridges over optical discs. Not new to this concept by any means — being the preferred medium for the 3DS handheld device, the electronics giant not only wants to play up the nostalgia factor but also take advantage of the many technical advantages retro cartridges hold over its modernized counterpart. The former not only features increased capacity and speed of flash for memory, it also proves burdensome for pirate copying, not to mention cheaper mass production costs. It’s also important to note, if the NX truly is a double-duty console — both a portable gaming device and a home-based entertainment system — cartridges may be the only viable option to maintain its portability.
