Watch the Trailer for 'Magnus,' a Documentary on the World's #1 Chess Player
The true story about international grandmaster Magnus Carlsen.
With only a mere 16 pieces and a 64-square board, the game of chess has long been revered as a strenuous battle of the minds. The strategy board game has distinguished leagues of international grandmasters, yet only one young man has been setting world records every year since 2011.
This month director Benjamin Rhee proudly presents his full-feature documentary titled Magnus, named after 25-year-old Norwegian chess master Magnus Carlsen, who’s consistently been ranked number one in the world since he was 13 years old, and is the highest-rated player in the history of chess. A genius in his own right, Magnus exposes for the first time an intimate and emotional personal journey of a child who’s always felt like an outsider, and who merely attributes his success to his reliance on his gut feeling. It’s perhaps this very intuition that makes him one of the most brilliant minds in this world.
The film follows Magnus leading up to his World Chess Championship title (again) in 2013, and can be viewed during its April 19 and April 23 screenings at the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival. Expect news of a possible theatrical release that’s still yet to be confirmed for this November when Magnus returns to NYC for this year’s World Chess Championship.
