Kiwi Skateboarders Help Rebuild Christchurch With Levi's After Devastating Earthquake
Bringing the community together with skateboarding.
Back in 2011, a huge 6.3-magnitude earthquake hit Christchurch, New Zealand. The devastation brought in a death toll of 185 and thousands were left without homes. Inspired by other Levi’s skatepark builds around the world, several members of the Christchurch skateboarding community reached out to Levi’s and asked for support in reviving the skate community in the city. Quickly signing on to help, Levi’s recruited team ambassadors Josh Matthews, Joey Pepper, Al Partanen, Marius Syvanen, Pat Moran and Dan Plunkett to help. Very quickly, the team and Christchurch locals found a plot of land and converted it into a skatepark. Marking the sixth skatepark built in the world, the Christchurch project shows that skateboarding can definitely bring communities together.
