Occipital Has Figured out How to 'Bridge' Mixed VR and Actual Reality

And it’s only available on iPhone.

One of the hottest topics of 2016, virtual reality has been adopted by those outside of the tech realm as well — Childish Gambino recently shared a 360 degree VR video of Me and Your Mama just a couple of day ago. So what makes Occipital’s new mobile Bridge VR headset so unique? The answer lies in its own tech – Structure Sensor which captures 3D models of environments and Canvas which turns those 3D scans into usable digital models.

Bridge, which is compatible with iPhone 6, 6s, and 7 uses the Structure Sensor above the device to mix VR and physical reality. This allows the headset to solve the depth awareness problem of VR and makes it easier to develop mixed reality experiences which combine both your physical location and a virtual one. However, Bridge may not be meant for the consumer market just yet — it’s currently for designers who want to build and test mixed reality experiences and apps with the integrated software toolkit. Jeff Powers, CEO and co-founder of the company said that “positional VR is here and mixed reality is coming, and you can, with a relatively inexpensive device that uses the phone that you have, you can basically develop for both of those worlds and also share your stuff with anybody easily, if you’re a developer, I think the pitch is pretty solid.”

Check out the company’s video above and let us know what you think in the comments below.
