American sportswear giant Nike could be caught up in the bribery scandal that yesterday rocked soccer, resulting in the arrest of nine FIFA officials, according to Forbes. The officials face extradition to America from Switzerland, on suspicion of receiving bribes totaling $100m USD, according to the U.S. Department of Justice, with the release of a statement that some of the crimes alleged include ““the payment and receipt of bribes and kickbacks in connection with the sponsorship of CBF (the Brazilian national team) by a major U.S. sportswear company.” Nike seemed to confirm that it was the brand under investigation with a statement later in the day that read; “Like fans everywhere we care passionately about the game and are concerned by the very serious allegations. Nike believes in ethical and fair play in both business and sport and strongly opposes any form of manipulation or bribery. We have been cooperating, and will continue to cooperate, with the authorities.” How Nike’s alleged crimes, relating to their handling of the Brazilian national team’s endorsement deal, fits into the grander picture of soccer’s corruption remains to be seen, but this doesn’t look like one that is going away.
