Apple might be the latest to join the virtual reality race with the awarding of a patent by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office dating back to 2008, long before the likes of Google Cardboard and Samsung Gear VR. The design works in a similar manner to the Gear VR, in which an iPhone would be docked into the headset and used as the VR screen. In addition, Apple specified the various accessories and hardware features that could be built into the headset, including spare batteries, onboard memory, physical buttons and switches, a cooling system, and an optional remote to control the VR experience. However, with the company’s sights set on the release of the Apple Watch, an Apple-branded VR product seems to still be a long way off at this point in time.
