Saturday Night Live's Mock Commercial for 'Star Wars' Toys Is Tragically Honest
“For ages 6 and up. Waaay up.”
As Sotheby’s recent “RETURN OF THE NIGO” auction demonstrated with its total haul of $502,202 USD, Star Wars toys have never solely been the preserve of kids, more so the territory of serious collectors and self-professed nerds who store these toys away for years, untouched and wrapped in their original packaging. Saturday Night Live found this phenomenon to be rich material for its latest skit, which takes the form of a mock commercial that welcomingly incorporates this important segment of the market into its body. Within the skit, grown men fight with kids over the purpose of Star Wars toys, with the former seeing the act of playing with the toys (the original purpose for which they were designed) as a form of blasphemy.
