The World's Most Expensive Diamond Sold for $48.4 Million USD
Billionaire Joseph Lau apparently purchased the stone for his 7-year-old daughter.

Purchased by Hong Kong buyer Joseph Lau, billionaire owner of property firm Chinese Estates Holdings, the diamond weighs in at a staggering 12.03 carats and is of a remarkable blue color. The record-breaking sale of the ‘Blue Moon’ diamond took place at a Sotheby’s auction in Geneva and was promptly renamed the ‘Blue Moon of Josephine’ for the buyer’s 7-year-old daughter. According to the auctioneer David Bennett, the gem is the “highest price per carat” ever paid for any type of stone. The previous world record transaction for the most expensive diamond was the 24.78-carat Graff Pink, which was also sold by Sotheby’s back in 2010 for $46.2 million USD.
