Facebook Announces It Will Alert You When the Government Hacks Your Profile
The number of government requests for Facebook user data increased by 24% between 2014 and 2013.

Agent Mulder famously suggested that the government was watching us over a decade ago. But in 2013, Edward Snowden brought attention to the topic and hit a lot closer to home than the conspiracy theories of The X-Files. In a recent announcement by Facebook, if your account on the social media site is under threat of a breach caused by a “government-sponsored” hack, you will be notified. In a statement from Facebook’s Chief Security Officer Alex Stamos, he explains: “We do this because these types of attacks tend to be more advanced and dangerous than others, and we strongly encourage affected people to take the actions necessary to secure all of their online accounts.” Although critics may suggest that this measure is excessive, this is undoubtedly a big move for Facebook and could lead the way for similar security additions for other social media sites in the future.
