Damien Hirst Opens Gallery in London
A new host for Hirst’s art collection, a restaurant, and solo and group shows.
Celebrated English artist and art collector Damien Hirst has opened an art gallery in the South London area. Located in Vauxhall, Newport Street Gallery showcases a selection of the Bristol-born artist’s extensive art collection housed in a Caruso St John Architects-designed building made of three Victorian structures and two modern volumes. The opening exhibition titled “Power Stations” is currently being held at the 37,000 square-foot space, which features the work of the late British abstract painter John Hoyland and runs until April 3. Following that, the gallery will be hosting a variety of solo and group shows, as well as a new restaurant in 2016 called Pharmacy2.
Hirst remarked,
“I believe art should be experienced by as many people as possible and I’ve felt guilty owning work that is stored away in boxes where no one can see it… Having a space where I can put on shows from the collection is a dream come true. Newport Street is an incredible space with an amazing sense of history, and it’s a fantastic opportunity for me to wear a curatorial hat for a change, I couldn’t be happier.”
