According to Mike Free, one of the song’s producers, Big Sean‘s ever-popular diss-anthem “IDFWU” (which was certified gold this earlier this month) was originally intended for Justin Bieber. No, the track wasn’t meant to diss him but the Canadian artist was supposed to hop on the track (and to be titled “Turn Up”) instead of the Detroit rapper. The producer explains, “Originally I think Justin Bieber was supposed to have it; he had posted a video of a snippet and everything, where it was him doing the song. They ended up not taking it and Big Sean got the song, and I’m glad, because we ended up getting a really strong record for hip-hop.” We’re not exactly sure why the artists got switched around but if you’re curious to hear what the original sounded like, check the video above.
