In a way, director Jalmari Helander’s Big Game resembles the sort of mock trailer usually shot for some MTV award show as a skit for comedic purposes. But yes, despite all the fart-fetched insanity that you’ll see in the next minute and a half, this is an actual film.
Big Game is a British-Finnish action-adventure flick that reunites Helander with Rare Exports actor Onni Tommila, and along for the ride is Samuel L. Jackson. The plot is simple: Jackson is the President of the United States who finds himself stranded in the woods after Air Force One is shot down, until Tommila, whose campsite happens to be nearby, comes to the rescue. Together, the two must evade an assassination attempt on the president’s life. So the movie is basically White House Down with a touch of First Blood.
Chances are the trailer will illicit a “Huh?” reaction, but Big Game does seem to have that B-movie charm with ludicrous action sequences and dialogue so cheesy that it’s good. It was also well-received at the Toronto International Film Festival last September, so who knows, perhaps two hours of Jackson and a kid picking off bad guys in the wilderness could be entertaining to watch.
Big Game is set to be released on March 25, 2015 in Finland, but there’s no word yet on when it’ll hit theaters in North America.
