With a discerning eye for shooting on-the-go, alongside the help of presets and filters, budding photographers can build a decent Instagram portfolio in a short span of time. On the other hand, there’s Jenah Yamamoto — better known as Gypsy One — who’s no new name to the blogosphere. Backed by a loyal fan base, garnered from the pre-Instagram era when Tumblr first sprawled the web, the Hawaiian photographer’s online platforms have long served as staples for inspiration. Her admirers include the likes of Beyoncé and Green Day who look to her distinctive work as muse, while collaborations with adidas, Ironlak and RVCA only provide further examples of her talent. While graffiti, weed and body art lend themselves as motifs, Gypsy’s aesthetics is best trademarked by the scantily-clad females who pose sensuously in striking locations – think desolate beaches, highways, motel rooms, and the like. Presenting powerful narratives that blend together exotic styling with a nonchalant attitude ingrained in her Hawaiian roots, Gypsy’s images are tinged with a sense of adventure and rebelliousness — a reflection of her own lifestyle as a young, traveling artist.
Shot mostly with the aid of natural sunlight and a Canon 5D Mark II, check out Gypsy’s latest THROUGH THE LENS for us and head over to her webpage for more on the Oahu-based photographer.
