Wu-Tang Clan's Fans Create Kickstarter to Purchase Exclusive Album, Intend to Share Tracks for Free

Not too long ago, Wu-Tang Clan announced that they would be releasing their secret album Once Upon A Time in Shaolin, but the only catch was the million-dollar price tag and the fact that they will only release one single copy. In an age where digital consumption of music is the norm and artists are often expected to share their art for free, the group apparently decided to do this in a move to place musical art on the same level as physical art, with museums and tours included in part of the album’s pre-release plan. According to RZA, the group has already been offered a price of $5 million USD, but now two Wu-Tang fans named Russell Meyer and Calvin Okoth-Obbo are trying their hand at purchasing the album by creating a Kickstarter page.
I can’t imagine RZA being upset if enough Wu-Tang fans get together and raise enough money to purchase [the album], We don’t want some guy … who literally has money to burn to buy it as a collector item that only six people will get to listen to.
The two plan to purchase the album through funds raised by the Kickstarter campaign, and then release the album for free on the internet, but what will happen to the physical copy of the album itself is yet to be decided.
We could rock-paper-scissors to see who gets to hold it … Or we could do a vote or raffle of all backers to see who keeps it. It’s not about ownership, it’s about getting it out there. We’d rather just get the musical content and be able to share that with the people who want to be able to appreciate it.
