Pulling our illustrations out of the two-dimensional world and lifting them above the paper they were once confined to, LIX has developed at 3D-printing pen that enables you to create rigid freestanding objects through the process of heating and cooling plastic. Although it is far from the first of its kind, it is one of, if not the only that resembles the shape and feel of a traditional writing utensil. Measuring 6.45 inches long, 0.55 inches in diameter, and weighing a mere 40 grams, its sustainable aluminum body heats plastic to over 300°F forming a hot liquid that solidifies once exposed to the air. Each four-inch plastic filament lasts for about two minutes of draw-time and then must be refilled. LIX is currently seeking initial funding for their 3D pen through Kickstarter with hopes of delivering their extraordinary utensil this fall.
