Director Mami Sunada takes us inside Japan’s beloved Studio Ghibli for her acclaimed documentary The Kingdom of Dreams and Madness. Over the course of one year, Sunada followed Ghibli’s three masterminds–directors Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata, and producer Toshio Suzuki–at work with their stalwart crew, capturing their hectic schedule to complete Miyazaki’s final feature The Wind Rises, as well as Takahata’s The Tale of The Princess Kaguya. Her film not only explores the brilliant minds of the aforementioned trio, but also provides an in-depth look at the studio responsible for some of the most imaginative films that have captivated audiences worldwide for the past 29 years.
The Kingdom of Dreams and Madness will have a limited theatrical release in New York on November 28. It will be available on all digital platforms starting December 9, then on DVD and Video on Demand on January 27, 2015.
