One Wheel: The Self-Balancing Electric Skateboard

Inspired by the creator’s dream of one day having a hoverboard like in the Back to the Future series, the One Wheel is a full three steps closer to that goal. Packing motion sensors, a direct drive hub motor, and lithium battery into a relatively thin housing, the One Wheel is controlled with gyroscopes and accelerometers much like the Segway in that the rider leans forward to accelerate and backwards to brake. Its large tire and programming ensure the ride is as smooth as possible across a variety of surfaces. The project is still receiving funds through its Kickstarter page.
