“We’ve always stuck to our guns and supplied British-made products and strived for really top quality items,” explains Grant Mosley of Mercian Cycles. “If there’s any way we can make an item better, we do it.” Founded in 1946 in Derby, Mercian Cycles got its start building bespoke steel frames using traditional frame-building methods, with one craftsman building each frame by hand from beginning to end. The company continues today under Mosley’s watchful gaze, supplying its loyal customer base with custom-made bikes and the odd cup of tea. Here, the owner of Mercian Cycles and one-time “Saturday boy” talks about his collaboration with Rapha, the process of building a two-wheeler, and the company’s ongoing partnership with Paul Smith.
