Think denim and it’s unlikely that Tuscany, Italy is the first place that springs to mind. That may soon change with the recent resurgence of Roy Roger’s, a Campi Bisenzio-headquartered label that has been creating American-inspired jeans and garments since 1949. Essentially Italy’s first denim brand, Roy Roger’s presents its “Rugged” collection for 2013-2014, a range inspired by “the American college world of the ’50s.” The brand has gradually expanded its offerings this season to include pure wool sweaters, English shetland jackets by Moon, and oxford shirts in the colors of American college football teams. Traditional designs, meanwhile, dominate the jean offerings, with straight legs and natural washes, along with fabric labels that recover the triangular banners of American football teams. Add an Easy Care capsule and Vietnam veteran-inspired details to the mix and you get more proof that, when it comes to Americana, outsiders often do it better.
