Kendrick Lamar – now arguably one of the most promising and celebrated artists in hip-hop today – built his success off the back of his mixtape proficiency. Before the days of Overly Dedicated, Section.80 and good kid, m.A.A.d. city, the then 16-year-old Compton spitter recorded a mixtape titled Hub City Threat, Minor of The Year. One of the cuts off the mixtape saw K. Dot jumping on Jay-Z’s “Track 1 (Hova Song)” from Jay’s Vol. 3… The Life and Times of S. Carter. While the majority of the project remains unheard, K. Dot’s tribute to Jay-Z’s instrumental shows a glimpse of the potential that Lamar held even at the age of 16.
