The Shakin Stevens House in Melbourne is a house of two faces; viewed from the front, one sees a traditional heritage house with the only hint of something different being the unsettling green door. But when viewed from the back the house appears as a contemporary, open and free-flowing property. Given the brief of making the property feel more spacious and functional and blend indoor and outdoor spaces seamlessly, Matt Gibson Architecture + Design created a flowing property with few internal walls and opening up the space with fewer delineated areas. Using large glass spaces, the architects created unobstructed views of the backyard garden from all areas of the house making a tangible link to the green spaces. Featuring a predominantly white interior with green highlights, the house’s color scheme builds on the client’s request to be linked to the outdoors.
