In case you haven’t noticed by now, Calvin Broadus, better known as Snoop Dogg, has a new album in the making. Titled Reincarnated, this highly anticipated record finds the West Coast legend joining forces with Diplo, Arield Reichtshaid and Dre Skull of Major Lazer. It also marks his first non-rap album from Snoop as it will exclusively feature reggae-infused sounds, announcing Snoop’s conversion to Rastafarianism. Make no mistake, and label this a mere marketing plot. While recording his latest LP, Snoop Lion and the production trio took a spiritual trip to Jamaica where Reincarnated had been recorded. During this journey, Snoop finds himself embraced by the Jamaican people and is positively impacted by Rastafarian culture. There should be no doubt that The Doggfather is serious about his transition as he went as far to be baptized in a sacred Rastafarian ceremony.
“Rasta is not a religion it’s a way of life, it’s a ‘livity,’” Snoop explained to the media. “I’ve always been Rastafari, I just didn’t have my third eye open. But it’s wide open now.”
There is no doubt his decade-spanning discography encompasses timeless releases like Doggystyle, Dr. Dre’s The Chronic, as well as countless singles like “Gin and Juice,” “Drop It Like It’s Hot” and many others, the question remains, would you have preferred to see Calvin Broadus continuing his path as Snoop Dogg or are you ready to embrace Snoop Lion?
