Situated in Mexico City, Mexico, the Maruma House by Fernanda Canales blends a modern balance of openness and privacy. Completed in 2011, the home boasts a decidedly edgy exterior with very defined lines that make up its four-story construction. The interior sees expansive window spaces, wooden flooring and wall paneling, as well as a cylindrical opening at the ceiling that allow outdoor lighting to flow freely into the main rooms of the build-out. Notable inside is a three-story-tall bookshelf that aligns adjacent to the staircase. The system of overlapping boxes is delineated by the inclusion of an al fresco patio and an open garden area which lives on the ground level.
