Red Hook Summer from famed New York director Spike Lee is getting a general release after enjoying a successful Sundance Film Festival showing. The film is said to be a marked return to Lee’s guerilla style of independent filmmaking, as it was shot in only three weeks on a shoestring budget financed by Lee himself. The coming-of-age story follows a young boy from Atlanta who finds himself in Red Hook (a neighborhood in New York’s Brooklyn) to spend the summer with his grandfather, whom he’s never met. While an exact date has not been set, the film can be expected to land in select theaters this August.
