Last year was a capricious one for Portland-based indie folk band The Decemberists. In January, they released their well-received sixth album, The King Is Dead, and almost immediately hit the road for a lengthy tour. All seemed to be well until May, when it was announced that the band’s multi-instrumentalist and backup vocalist Jenny Conlee had been diagnosed with breast cancer. But, thankfully, things took a turn for the better when it was revealed in October that Conlee’s cancer was in remission.
Although The Decemberists aren’t currently on tour, they’re readying the release of We All Raise Our Voices To The Air, a live album that will be available in double-CD and triple-vinyl form on March 13. They’ve been involved with something else that’s pretty exciting too. One of the most anticipated films of this year is Hunger Games, the big screen adaptation of the award-winning sci-fi drama novel by the same name. For the soundtrack to it, Grammy-winning producer T-Bone Burnett was tapped to work with a star-studded list of artists. Along with Taylor Swift, KiD CuDi, Arcade Fire and Miranda Lambert, The Decemberists got in the studio to record a song for the album. The track, titled “One Engine,” can now be streamed below and purchased on iTunes. If you’re interested in watching the video for Taylor Swift and The Civil Wars’ lead single from the Hunger Games soundtrack, “Safe & Sound,” that’s out now too.
