The Montalban Theater in LA was home to the premiere of Nike’s 12 Miles North – The Nick Gabaldon Story, where fans of surf and film gathered to bask in the glow of a truly remarkable tale. Nick Gabaldon was a pioneer in American surf culture as the first African American to challenge the California waves and bitter societal segregation of the early 1950s. His determination to challenge those boundaries and pursue the sport he’d quickly grown to love drove him to paddle 12 miles north, along the coast to Malibu to surf. It was ultimately the place of his tragic and unexpected passing, but it was in his passion and pursuit of a dream that forever cemented his legacy in surfing lore.
