Audi has unveiled the A3 e-tron, an all-electric variant of the A3 hatchback that will reach a small number of consumers in select markets as part of Audi’s pilot program for alternative systems. Unlike that of a plug-in hybrid, the production A3 e-tron is a pure EV that receives power from an electric motor with 199 lb-ft of torque and a 26kW lithium-ion battery. Industry insiders suspect that with that kind of power, top speed will be in the 90 mph range. The A3 e-tron pilot program will take place in the San Francisco, Los Angeles, Washington D.C. and Denver, and is designed to allow engineers to monitor the effects of climate conditions, driving patterns and energy performance.
