Coachella 2012 sells out in under three hours

Last summer, before it was even announced who would be performing, a select pre-sale round of tickets for Coachella 2012 became available for a very limited time. After the official festival lineup was revealed earlier this week, the internet was set ablaze and it was a given that tickets for the festival would sell out fast. But this year’s Coachella is different from all of its predecessors. Much to the outroar of some dedicated fans who have attended the event in years past, the full artist lineup will be present on the Empire Polo Club grounds in Indio, California for two consecutive weekends instead of just one. To state the obvious, that means that more people will be able to attend this year’s Coachella than any time before. But despite the doubled amount of tickets available, demand has exceeded supply.

At 12 p.m. EST today, @coachella tweeted that tickets for the festival were officially on sale. Less than two hours later, passes for weekend one (April 13-15) had sold out. That may not surprise most, but what came next just might be the defining moment for Coachella’s popularity and relevance in popular culture. As of 2:57 p.m. EST, less than three hours after they became available to the public, tickets for weekend two (April 20-22) were gone. The festival, which is expected to see an average of 75,000 attendees per day, is completely sold out.

If you didn’t score a ticket and you are hoping to attend Coachella this year, StubHub might be your only friend. For those that live in the Indio area, though, you may have another chance. According to local Palm Springs, California newspaper The Desert Sun, “Organizers have pledged to sell another 2,000 Coachella general admission passes—a thousand for each weekend—to east valley residents Jan. 28 at the Riverside County Fairgrounds.”
