Since his debut album, Early In The Morning, came out in February 2010, Irish singer-songwriter James Vincent McMorrow has been garnering an increasing amount of recognition and fans for his folk-driven ballads. Earlier this year, he passionately covered Adele’s “Someone Like You” and put his own halfway-funny twist to Willow Smith’s “Whip My Hair.” Now, the 28-year-old has returned with another rendition of a popular song, this time covering Steve Winwood’s 1986 Billboard Hot 100 chart-topping hit, “Higher Lover.” You’ve without a doubt heard Winwood’s original, but if you can’t quite put a finger on how it sounds, click here. The original is essentially an upbeat, pop-heavy tune with thought-provoking, meaningful lyrics that are drowned out by the 808 and synth-driven production that was typical of the time period. However, McMorrow strips the tune down into an impressive, sultry, slower song led only by his falsetto and the keys of a piano. Listen below, and head over to McMorrow’s website to see if he’s performing in a town near you this fall.
