Bon Iver is in heavy demand these days. Sure, the appearance on six songs of My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy of the band’s frontman Justin Vernon might have helped a little, but the band’s debut For Emma, Forever Ago garnered critical acclaim in 2007 for good reason. The complex effort was created with nothing more “than a few microphones and some aged recording equipment” according to Vernon. Now the time has come to dedicate themselves to the still-untitled follow-up. However, Vernon discovered a problem as he realized that he had to relearn how to write music.
“Somewhere along the line I forgot how to write songs. I couldn’t do it anymore with a guitar. It wasn’t happening. I brought in a lot of people to change my voice – not my singing voice but my role as the author of this band, this project.”
Thus, the Wisconsin native enlisted the talents of saxophonist Colin Stetson, who has worked with Arcade Fire and Linda Rondstadt collaborator Greg Leisz in the past. The result is a lush 10-track collage in which each song represents a place. The opening tune, “Perth,” recounts Vernon’s experience in the Australian city whereas “Wisconsin” deals with childhood for instance. Release date and title have yet to be announced.
