DJ Soulscape - The Sound of Seoul (Mixtape)
A native of Seoul, DJ Soulscape has built up an impressive reputation within the industry
A native of Seoul, DJ Soulscape has built up an impressive reputation within the industry through sophisticated turntablism, musical production and amassing an incredible collection of vinyl records. His most recent endeavors included the much-lauded The Sound of Seoul release which intends to honor rare Korean soul, funk, jazz, psychedelic rock, and boogaloo records from the late ’60s and early ’70s.
The postwar Korean peninsula was a melting pot where different cultures from the East and the West intertwined. The music business grew significantly as clubs were founded around the U.S. military bases. Many musicians who played for the clubs had interpreted and localized rock, jazz, soul and boogaloo in various styles. However, such unique music was suppressed and vanished for the political interests of the military regime in the mid ‘70s. Today, the musical genres that once thrived during those periods remain discontinued and forgotten.
Soulscape has recently been featured in the NY Times and was tabbed for VICE and Intel’s The Creator’s Project. Check out the first installment of The Sound Of Seoul below.
