Multiple sources confirmed today that Keith “Guru” Elam, from the legendary Gang Starr and the Jazzmatazz-project has suffered cardiac arrest and is in a coma. The influential rapper is in a New York-area hospital after a cardiac episode awaiting surgery. His family, his friends and fans worldwide are currently praying for the best. More concrete details should be unveiled today.

Originally from the Boston area, Guru moved to Brooklyn in the 80s. After meeting 45 King in 1988 the young MC joined forces with talented producer DJ Premier. Both went on and formed the legendary hip hop collective Gang Starr. Through classic releases like “Step In the Arena (1990), “Daily Operation” (1992), “Hard To Earn” (1994), “Moment Of Truth” (1998) and “The Ownerz” (2003) the group helped pioneering the New York Hip Hop sound.

As a solo artist Guru dedicated his craft for his Jazzmatazz-series and collaborated with various Jazz-orientated musicians like Donald Byrd, N’Dea Davenport Ramsey Lewis, Branford Marsalis and Jamiroquai. As an MC Guru constantly avoided using charisma and focused instead on his lyrical ability.
