Artinfo recently had the privilege of a rare studio visit with one of the biggest names in contemporary art, Jeff Koons, who hosted a handful of art world luminaries at his NYC headquarters on Tuesday night. The occasion was supposedly to celebrate the recently-announced collaboration with BMW. Koons is the 17th artist called upon for the the company’s ongoing Art Car project, though he didn’t have so much as a rendering on hand.
Of course, this fact hardly detracted from the excitement surrounding the exclusive affair, as museum directors, art critics and members of Koons’ army of assistants eagerly mingled, drinks in hand, amid dozens of iconic works in progress.
As for the BMW project, Koons is “thrilled” to follow in the footsteps of a veritable pantheon of modern artists, from Warhol to Lichtenstein to Rauschenberg, who have had the honor of participating in the project since its inception in 1975.
