Coconuts. Palm trees. Hardwood bragging rights. An old whaling village that once served as the playground for Hawaiian royalty now serves as the table-setting territory of college basketball for the Maui Invitational. Fitting: some of the game’s most-storied schools annually test their early-season mettle in a city that’s on the National Register of Historic Places. Connecticut, Kentucky, Michigan State, Oklahoma, Virginia, Washington, and Wichita State will each take the court in a special makeup of the Nike Hyperdunk 2010, coming with 8 different laces representing the field.
