Lodger’s special release “Shoe of the Month” for October gets an unveiling here as the brand teams up with an intricate master of the intrecciato technique to create this 2 Lace Derby. The shoe features two different materials, patent calf which serves as the base and matte calf suede. Each shoe is individually hand-woven and made to order. Upcoming, the Shoe of the Month microsite will be updated with details regarding the shoe’s availability. Below is an account of the process from Lodger designer, Annejkh Carson.
I recently spent a few days out in our Italian factory; working with a gentleman who has been developing a new intrecciato technique. Intrecciato is the process of weaving leather strips by hand to form individual pieces.
His process involves cutting individual leather pattern pieces; such as a toecap, and then hand slotting by eye the pattern piece at assorted intervals; leaving the leather peppered with a gridline through which he guides ribbons of leather. The ends of the leather ribbons are then carefully secured with little hand stitches beneath the lining.
I worked with his technique to create the design we will offer as our October Shoe of the Month; and these shoes will be truly unique. Each pair of vamp patterns will be individually hand woven by him; to order. The leather combination I have selected is a patent calf base; laced through with contrasting wafer-thin slices of matte calf suede; which we have split to a ladies shoe leather weight. The skill involved in lasting such a delicate combination is a joy to observe!
