Opening Ceremony founder Humberto Leon caught up with Dunhill’s Kim Jones as the two discussed a wide-range of topics including Jones’ direction of Dunhill and other elements of his life including his insights into travel and New York. The Dunhill 2009 fall/winter collection can be seen here.

Humberto Leon: What classic KJ elements are brought to the Dunhill line?
Kim Jones: Well I haven’t really changed my design aesthetic, I’ve just focused on the more formal side of menswear which is where I was heading anyway. But all my small details are still there!

HL: The accessories for this line are sick, has it been cool doing luxury accessories?
KJ: Yes I love that part. For me it’s probably the most exciting area – using new fabrications and techniques on something I haven’t done a huge amount on in the past!

HL: What do you think every man should have in his closet?
KJ: Well, some nice shirts, cashmere sweaters, good outerwear, a blazer, and anything he feels comfortable in.

HL: What do you like to collect?
KJ: I collect a lot of things but not specifics. Books, clothing, art, music, and bits from all of my travels. My house is quite eclectic to say the least! My favorite pieces are a Leigh Bowery jacket, a 500 year old Buddha statue, and a pair of Balenciaga lego shoes, all the bits of artwork I have, and all of my books!

HL: What was your favorite “clubbing” outfit from the past?
KJ: I think probably the funniest was the early nineties very large shirts with small knitted waistcoats. It was just plain horrible and everyone was doing sort of floaty dancing from side to side!

HL: When’s the last time you visited New York? Do you have a favorite NY restaurant?
KJ: I haven’t been to NYC for 6 months, I think. I always go to Café Habana and have the Cuban pork and corn with cheese and chili.

HL: If you could name anyone, who would you want to sit next to you on a plane?
KJ: Oh well I don’t really mind – I get on a plane and fall instantly asleep. I have trained myself to do so from the minute I sit down.

HL: It’s pretty cool to be a part of Dunhill’s history, will the Kim Jones line come back anytime soon?
KJ: Well I never say never and it’s good being the first creative director to Alfred himself. It’s a really great brand and it deserves for everyone to know it!
